In his solo exhibition ‘MAIN + HASTINGS’, Vancouver-based photographer Ross den Otter documents street level views of Main Street and Hastings Street in Vancouver.

Through his panoramic photographs, den Otter’s intent is to demonstrate the contrasts of use of the more diverse street blocks along these two arteries. Both streets are in the process of significant change, and house a mix of businesses and residential properties that could only exist in older neighborhoods, due to the grandfathering of permitted uses. These photographs offer a microcosm of the larger changes shaping the current and future developments of Vancouver and beyond.

The purpose of this exhibition is, in effect, to transplant these streets to the rather more quaint locale of Deep Cove, North Vancouver. Through this relocation, visitors will bring fresh perspectives to these views, perhaps letting go of previous prejudices and perceptions.

Ross is a mixed media artist. He was born in Port Alberni BC in 1969, and was raised in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. Ross currently lives and works in Vancouver where he studied photography at Langara College in 1990. His photographic work has appeared in publications across North America.
