With Amir Amiri on santur (72-string hammered dulcimer) and Richard Moody on viola, cultural borders fall to the wayside in this eclectic and electric mix of east and west. A classically trained musician from Tehran, Amiri has worked with musicians such as Edgar Meyer, Hugh Fraser and Mike Murley and performed on movie soundtracks such as The Lord of the Rings. A master of violin and viola, Canadian Richard Moody comes from a family of musicians, including sister Ruth Moody and has performed with bands such as The Wailin’ Jennys and The Bills. From two seemingly disparate worlds Moody and Amiri find a way to create an evocative new musical landscape in their newly released album, Safar, that is both refreshingly new and deeply familiar all at once.
