Life, Above All
Wednesday November 9, 2011 at 7:00pm
Cineplex Odeon at Park & Tilford Mall
333 Brooksbank Ave, North Vancouver
In Life, Above All, Oliver Schmitz tells the story of twelve-year-old Chanda, who endures her family’s burdens with unrelenting courage and unending loyalty. Their hardships are emblematic of those long-faced by South Africa: HIV/AIDS, abject poverty and a state of denial.
Just after the death of her newly-born sister, Chanda learns of a rumor that spreads through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother and the truth.
In a role reversal that happens much too soon, Chanda becomes the caretaker and protector of the woman who taught her unconditional love. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart.

Eric Alexander is certainly one of the top tenor saxophonists playing today, his mastery of the music and his instruments are unsurpassed. With over two dozen CDs out under his own name and appearing as sidemen on countless others, Eric Alexander has made his mark on the jazz world and documented his progress as a tenor master. He has a rich tone and an aggressive, driving style that grabs the listener’s attention and won’t let go.
“The people I listened to in college are still the cats that are influencing me today,” says Alexander. “Monk, Dizzy, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson- the legacy left by Bird and all the bebop pioneers, that language and that feel, that’s the bread and butter of what I do.”
Eric’s friend and mentor, Harold Mabern, is one of jazz’s most respected and skillful pianists. As a sideman and leader, Mabern has played with many jazz greats including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Lionel Hampton, Benny Golson and Sarah Vaughan. He has been a member of the groundbreaking groups the Jazztet, MJT + 3, and the Contemporary Piano Ensemble. A longtime faculty member at William Paterson University, Mabern is a frequent instructor at the Stanford Jazz Workshop.
This concert is brought to you in part by The Hard Rubber Orchestra and Coastal Jazz and Blues.

Opening Reception: Saturday, Nov 12, 2:00-4:00pm
Anne Gaze
Anne’s paintings and prints are inspired by the archeological sites in Mexico. She explores their unique settings from aerial viewpoints, as well as the affects of time on their structures and surfaces.
She draws maps of the ruins and, by means of woodcut and lift print techniques, incorporated them into prints. She then examines the ancient buildings themselves – how their shapes, structures and surfaces had been affected by time resulting in a series of collographs to best capture their extraordinary textures.
Painting allows her further exploration. By increasing the scale, focusing on colour and carving into the plaster, she strives to convey the moods as well as the atmospheric and geographical qualities unique to each setting.
Anne is a graduate of Emily Carr University. She lives and works in East Vancouver where her studio is open to the public during the annual Eastside Culture Crawl. Her work has been shown throughout Canada, the US and Japan.
