Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn

Title: Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn
Location: Kay Meek Centre
Description: After winning Best Production at the recent Theatre BC North Shore Zone Festival of Plays, Table Manners, directed by Alison Jopson, is returning to the Kay Meek Centre, this time on the Mainstage FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY – Thursday, July 2 @ 8 pm.

Theatre West Van’s production has “wonderful comic timing and pacing”, and is a definite audience-pleaser. Don’t miss the chance to see this fast-paced and elegant British comedy by one of the world’s funniest and most prolific playwrights, Alan Ayckbourn (“Britain’s most popular and prolific playwright since Billy Shakespeare”.)

Table Manners is part of the delightful comic trilogy The Norman Conquests, which are ingeniously structured to allow each play to be enjoyed independently. Annie, the Cinderella of the family, still lives in the old family house and takes care of mother. Her brother Reg and his wife Sarah come for the weekend so that Annie can go away for a rest. They think she is going with Tom, the local vet with whom she has had a friendly relationship for some years, but in fact it is Norman, her sister Ruth’s husband, that she is planning to meet. All does not go as planned. Ruth is summoned and the com¬bination of too little food, too much alcohol and too many secrets creates a hilarious and fascinating puzzle. Ayckbourn reveals the frustration and disappointments which bubble beneath the surface of a family’s relationships and brings to light their thoughts on sex, marriage, love and loneliness.
